Anybody who knows our family very well knows that we are not what most people would consider “gun fanatics.” You’re more likely to find us shooting photos than firearms. Or hunting bargains than big game.
Nevertheless, we are staunch supporters of the Second Amendment. And we believe a well-armed citizenry is a deterrent to crime. So it’s important to us that our children learn basic gun safety and skills.
Although our older kids have all received such training, we’d never taken time to teach the younger ones. So when Range 702 offered to let us try out their facilities during a recent trip to Las Vegas in exchange for a blog review, we naturally took them up on the offer.
We didn’t know exactly what to expect when we signed up for this promotion. But were very impressed with how clean, professional, and family friendly both the venue and the employees were. No obnoxious music or tacky posters or anything else that might be objectionable for young eyes or ears.
And we greatly appreciated Range 702‘s high safety standards. As well as their obvious commitment to making sure everyone present exercises proper gun etiquette.
To protect their delicate hearing, children under 10 are not allowed on the shooting range. The range gets loud, despite the heavily padded ear protection they issued to the rest of us.
That means our sweet Abigail had to sit this one out.
Watching her brothers fire all those target rounds and not getting to try it herself was, according to Abby, “the low point of our entire vacation.”
Back when our older kids were learning, they’d focused on basic firearms like pistols and shotguns. But this younger set who trained at Range 702 also got to shoot some fully automatic weapons. Those were more akin to the ones their dad used in the military.
The Range 702 specializes in providing such experiences, and it was a lot of fun.
I had planned to take the role of a spectator. I figured I’d let the guys practice their aim while I took pictures and kept an eye on our 8-year-old.
Thankfully, Colton, our Range Safety Officer (RSO), talked me into trying a little target practice myself.
As you can see on my target sheet, I did pretty well. Especially considering the fact I haven’t practiced in over 30 years.
I was in college last time I set foot on a firing range. That one reminded me of the wild, wild west. It entailed a lot of strangers lining up in a row and all shooting at the same time. I confess to feeling a little unnerved by that set-up!
The Range 702 was far more controlled than that. Never once did I feel like any of us were in any danger during our time there. We practiced shooting one at a time. And the RSO stayed right beside us the entire time, offering instruction and making sure we all stayed safe.
I love the fact Range 702 provided everything we needed. Guns. Ammunition. Shooting lanes. Target sheets. Safety gear. And everything in a family friendly environment that places primary emphasis on safety.
